SUCCEED Student Program
About the program
SUCCEED is a 5-day program where CMU Ph.D. students work with underclassman high school students to improve their understanding of energy, the environment, and climate change. By the end of the program you should be able to explain the effect of climate change and its relationship with the energy sector. The program delves into how electricity is generated, demanded, and used throughout the country. Students will learn about some of the grand challenges facing energy engineering fields, how new technology can play a role in mitigating climate change, that all energy options have tradeoffs, and that policy can be used to effect change. The program is designed to open students’ minds to the challenges at this intersection and encourage them to seek careers in climate, energy, or other STEM fields.
Time and location
The 2016 program will be held on Monday, July 18 to Friday, July 22, 2016, from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. The program takes place on the Carnegie Mellon University campus located in Pittsburgh, PA.
Benefits
The program will connect high school students to graduate students working on the cutting edge of the energy and climate space. The program includes a variety of experiments, field trips and activities organized by PhD students from Carnegie Mellon University’s department of Engineering & Public Policy. All participants attend the program for free, and free lunches are provided every day.
Applicant selection criteria
SUCCEED is a coed program open to students enrolled in 9th or 10th grade as of April 2016 who are in the process of deciding whether to pursue math or science degrees after high school graduation. The program is limited to 30 participants.
