Topic: Sea level rise from melting ice in Greenland and Antarctica: causes, impacts and solutions

Abstract:  The ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting away, fast, sooner than anticipated, from climate change caused by human emissions of greenhouse gases. This rapid evolution, resulting from the complex interactions between the atmosphere, the ocean, and land ice, has been captured in great detail by a growing body of observational platforms ranging from satellites, airborne to robotic platforms and is progressively incorporated in numerical models to constrain the models and reduce the uncertainties of projections. In this presentation, I will cover how melting occurs, what we know and what we do not know, where we stand in terms of projections and process understanding, the implications for the coming century, and briefly address the solutions in terms of adaptation and mitigation strategies.
